          The Institute for Population and Development Studies of Zhejiang University is merged by the former Population and Development research Institute of Hangzhou University and the Population and Medical Institute of Zhejiang Medical University, in March 2000. Currently, the Population Institute of Zhejiang University has twelve research staffs, among them are four professors, four associate professors, and four lecturers (assistant professors). The institute are permitted of grant the Doctor and Master degree of the major demography and sociology, both of which are the key support of Zhejiang University.

           

          In retrospect, from the 1980s the institute has been funded for more than 60 research projects, which contained like the UNFPA, UNESCO, FAO, WHO, WBG, National Social Science Fund, Natural Science Foundation, State Board of Education, National Development and Reform Commission, National Health and Family Planning Commission of the People's Republic of China, National Bureau of Statistics of the People’s Republic of China. There are 20 of the 60 research projects that have been adopted by the related department. Besides, the institute won the National Science and Technology Progress Award for 1 time, College award of Humanities and Social Sciences for 2 times,  and Provincial and Ministerial awards for 28 times.

           

          The Executive Director of Institute for Population and Development Studies, are Professor Mi Hong, who is Professor and Doctoral Supervisor of major demography, social security and Non-Traditional Security Management, School of Public Affairs, and concurrently also responsible for the Deputy Director of Center For Non-Traditional Security & Peaceful Development Studies Director of Research Base of System Simulation, MOHRSS-CALSS-ZJU.

           

          In 2013, Professor Mi Hong and his team joined the research of The Top System Design of Social Security in China. Additionally, from the year 2011, Professor Mi has been funded by the Ford Foundation for 4 years. The projects that are on research contained about Constructing the Social Pension Service System (Ministry of Education Key Project), National "Thirteen Five" population planning (National Development of Reform Commission Project), the Construction of Chinese Social Security System based on the Multi-State Family Structure (cooperate with University of Helsinki, Finland and World Bank), and the Research of Immigrant of China-based on big data (cooperate with Imperial College London).
